Summer’s not over, so if you haven’t gotten a good bike ride in yet, you still have time. If you’re looking for a nice, casual ride, the Rail Trails are the perfect place to go. A network of trails throughout New England, the Rail Trails are a great way to take in the local scenery while riding trails built for bikes. We love all the Rail Trails, but there are a few that you won’t want to miss while the summer weather is still here. So head to your local bike shop in MA for a tune-up or a bike rental, and then hit the trails!

Want to get some good bike rides in before the summer ends? Here are three Rail Trails we recommend riding this summer.

Mass Central Rail Trail

Whether you want a long ride or a quick spin, the Mass Central Rail Trail is perfect for however you like to ride. Comprised of several open segments that add up to nearly 50 miles, the Mass Central trail is still a work in progress, but its central location is great for connecting to other trails across the state. The trail starts in Boston’s northwestern suburbs and extends into the western part of the state. Along the way, it connects to the Minuteman Commuter Bikeway, takes you past West Waushacum Pond, through Connecticut River Greenway State Park, and into downtown Northampton. It’s the best way to take in our beautiful state on a bike.

Nashua River Rail Trail

If you’d like a shorter ride with plenty of wildlife, the Nashua River Rail Trail is what you’re looking for. The trail starts in southern New Hampshire and runs 12.3 miles, loosely parallel to the Nashua River. Follow tree-lined trails and wind your way through wetlands and waterways if you want to stop and observe the wildlife, Pepperell Pond, J. Harry Rich State Forest, and Groton School Pond are all ideal places.

Cape Cod Rail Trail

A cyclist’s summer is not complete without a ride down the Cape Cod Rail Trail! Rode the 27.5 miles up the cape or use it to connect to the East Coast Greenway. Pick up the trail just southeast of Barnstable and then cross the Bass River over a 160-foot bridge after a few miles. Around mile 9, you can keep left at the fork to stay on the Cape Cod trail or go the right to take the Old Colony Rail Trail. No matter the route you take, you’ll take in Cape Cod’s beautiful scenery along the way.
