Warm weather is here, and we’re ready to get our bikes out of storage and hit the trails. But bikes that have been sitting in storage need a little TLC before they’re ready for long rides or rough terrain. You can do the maintenance yourself or take it to your local bike repair shop for a tune-up.

Ready to ride? Here are the top spring maintenance tips from your local bike repair shop.

Clean Your Bike

The first thing to do is clean your bike of dirt and grime. Ideally, you cleaned your bike before storing it, but it might have collected dust and spiderwebs over the winter. Garages and sheds also have the uncanny ability to get things dirty that are just sitting there, so a thorough cleaning before your first springtime ride never goes amiss. If nothing else, your bike will look great!

Inspect the Frame and Moving Parts

After sitting in storage for a few months, your bike may have accumulated some corrosion. Inspect the frame to ensure it is in good shape and that there are no weak points. Once you’re confident the frame is all right, have a close look at all the moving parts. Check the brakes work properly and that the chain and other moving parts move smoothly. You’ll probably have to lubricate the chain and other parts as they get stiff when not in use. While you’re checking things, tighten the bolts and check the tire pressure.

Go for a Test Ride

Before you take your bike out on a long ride or rough terrain, take it for a test ride around your neighborhood or yard. The best way to tell if anything is stiff or not working properly is to ride the bike. If anything seems off, make adjustments and go for another ride until you’re happy with everything.
